One Heart One Tree for the UN Climate conference, COP21 in Paris.

A monumental work of art by Naziha Mestaoui, creating a forest of light on the monuments of Paris during the UN Climate Conference in 2015 (COP21). It offers spectators the ability to create a virtual tree of light using a heart beat sensor. For each virtual tree of light created, a real tree is actually planted in a reforestation project that spans across the world. Get your tree now: 1Heart1Tree

More than 45000 trees have already been reserved!! You can continue to support the project and make this dream come true!

1 Heart 1 Tree is a work of art that gives you the opportunity to plant a tree of light in 3D on the most famous monument in Paris: the EIFFEL TOWER.  With the app, you’ll be able to create a tree of light with your name on it, projected onto the Eiffel Tower. It will grow at the rate of your heartbeat.  1 Heart 1 Tree has a real impact on the environment.  For every digital tree that is planted on the moment, a real tree will be planted through reforestation programs all over the world.  Each virtual and real tree will be totally unique!

We will be transforming the Eiffel Tower into a virtual forest of light during the most significant environmental event of the year, the United Nations Climate Conference (COP21), in December 2015. The aim of the project is to plant millions of trees, both digital and real. Today, they need your help to be creators of 1 Heart 1 Tree.

Why is it important?

How we treat the environment is one of the biggest challenges the world is facing. And the COP21 is the most important international environmental event of the year, gathering 196 nations to find solutions to tackle climate change. Protecting forests is essential to supporting a healthy environment: trees are one of the solutions to fighting the greenhouse effect, saving clean water, and providing a habitat for wildlife. Trees are also a source of life and energy.

How will it work?

1 Heart 1 Tree is an artwork that connects the virtual with the real, technology with nature. They are developing an app which will generate a virtual tree for each participant. When you put your finger on the phone’s camera, your heartbeat will be recorded and sent to our database. You will receive your tree in 3D, with your name or a word of your choice on it, growing at the rate of your heartbeat. Your virtual tree has a unique ID code linked to a real tree, which will be planted in a reforestation program.

If you reserve your tree, you’ll receive a mail as soon as the application is available (around November 19th) to give birth to your tree or to offer the trees you reserved to your friends and community. You’ll be among the first persons to see their tree on the Eiffel Tower during the Opening Ceremony on the Eiffel Tower!

Each participant receives: a picture of your virtual tree + a picture of your tree with your name on it projected onto the EIFFEL TOWER + a certificate + a Google earth file of the plantation zone of your tree + a report about the project every 6 months during 3 years. You’ll stay in touch with your tree and with the plantation program you contributed to.

You will receive an appointment to plant your virtual tree on the Eiffel Tower wherever you are in the world, and you will see your tree in 3D, with your chosen name on it, growing on the Eiffel Tower at the rate of your heartbeat.

The artwork will be projected as a monumental artwork on the Eiffel Tower.

If you are not based in Paris, we will live-stream the projection to wherever you are so you can enjoy the experience live! If you have the chance to be in Paris come see your tree growing on the Eiffel Tower, otherwise, you can follow it directly from your smart phone. You will receive a picture of the Eiffel Tower with the projection of your tree and your name on it, in both cases. With 1 Heart 1 Tree we want to involve everybody, allowing you to be part of this project and feeling responsible and taking action for the future generations.

1 Heart 1 Tree uses 3D interactive mapping technologies. It is a technique that Naziha Mestaoui started to develop in 2003, during her research under the artist name of Electronic Shadow, in duo with Yacine Aït Kaci. The virtual forests on the Eiffel Tower will be projected with 30 videoprojectors projecting until the top of the Tower. The entire 3D environment will be calculated in realtime on a central server receiving all the information from the database fed by the phone application to generate all the trees. Your name will be projected on the Eiffel Tower during a period of time that will depend on the number of trees registered in the database. It will be between 8 seconds and 45 seconds. Your tree will grow accompanied by a word or name of your choosing, composed of 16 characters max. How can your tree be totally unique?

The application that we’re developing will use a series of data to generate a unique 3D virtual tree. The rate of your heartbeat is recorded with the camera on your phone. We use an algorithm to analyze the chromatic micro-changes due to the blood-circulation on the finger. Then your heartbeat, your name and the information about your real tree will be part of the data generating the 3D tree, giving birth to your unique virtual tree. The application is developed in Unity, a cross platform real-time 3D software.
