In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 36/67 establishing the International Day of Peace to “devote a specific time to concentrate the efforts of the United Nations and its Member States, as well as the whole of mankind, to promoting the ideals of peace and to giving positive evidence of their commitment to peace in all viable ways.”
In 2002, the UN General Assembly officially declared September 21st as the permanent annual date for the International Day of Peace. Each year, the UN encourages all nations and peoples to respect the suspension of hostilities during this day and commemorate it with educational measures and awareness-raising activities about peace.
Anyone, anywhere can celebrate Peace Day. Today, the U.N. Secretary-General will make the peace bell ring, a gift from Japan in 1954 cast from coins donated by children, to inaugurate the day. And, all around the world, activities and celebrations in Education, Music, Film, Sport, Art … will occur all weekend long, to share the same idea of peace.
