September 12, 2012 – Athens. In honor of International Peace Day, we invite Athenians to join us in act of peace and solidarity pasting white butterflies between Akademias and Solonos Street by the cultural department of the Municipality. The city of Athens has embraced the project and the Philharmonic Orchestra will join us during the pasting on Friday, September 20th, from 17h – 21h. The concept of a Butterfly City was a beautiful coincidence. Nepalese Artist, Milan Rai, had been working on an entirely different project. While working with newer ideas in his studio, a butterfly landed on his paintbrush. “It was a kind of revelation,” Milan says “at that moment, I became aware. This small butterfly, one of the most vulnerable creatures was there in front of me and of me and it was teaching me so much.”
Butterflies are a soulful symbol of transformation, once it comes out of its cocoon. It has to face storms, rain, scorching heat, pollution as well as loss of its natural habitat. However, despite the challenges, it flutters around spreading color and happiness into the mundane world during this short span of time. Milan Rai uses white butterflies for his installation piece as a symbol of pure transformation and hope. He believes that every individual like a butterfly has the power to transform and when this transformation happens collectively, we can observe miracles happening. He installs white butterflies anywhere in the city. It could be a broken and time battered cross-way , an fragmentary wall, a busy street or a tree trunk along a pavement. He started to create a butterfly city. Now, he wants his butterflies to travel around the globe creating a butterfly world, spreading the message of hope, our power to transform ourselves and our surrounding, into a world that is aware and ready to tap into its inner power and lift itself from the daily drudgery and for once open its eyes and see how wonderful and miraculous it is indeed live a life like a butterfly!
