May 31, 2011: Athens, Greece. The Goulandris Museum of Natural History, GAIA CENTREin cooperation with MELD’s Project Nero and the Third Division of Environmental Education Primary Athens will host NERAKI, a 2-day (4-hour) educational program called “Neraki” for children living in neighborhoods on the fringes of the Kifissos River, including the 4th Primary School in Egaleo and the 7th Primary School in Agioi Anargiroi, to explore and broaden their perceptions of water and specifically, the state of the Kifissos River, thus triggering their imaginative potential to positively change the way they see Athens and the world around them.

Workshop:
These two pilot workshops will be run by German Visual Artist, Alexander Schellow, Environmental Interpretor, Valya Stergioti, and GAIA CENTRE Education Officer Sophia Louzi. These pilots will be evaluated in the fall to then be proposed as part of the country’s educational program.

Neraki is dedicated to children (ages 9-11) living in neighborhoods on the fringes of the Kifissos River. The workshop will blend the visual arts and music with environmental issues, focusing on the Kifissos River and putting us in a unique position to implement and develop a new interpretative program which will inspire, educate and motivate children to understand and respect the environment.

By using art and interactive games, the workshop will deepen childrens’ understanding of basic sciences and environmental stewardship, by encouraging imagination, innovation and play with direct engagement and enjoyment to promoting learning.

Our aims are to bring awareness to young children regarding the issues surrounding the Kifissos River (its current problems, as well as its previous beauty and natural wealth to offer possible solutions) and to trigger children’s imaginations to create an alternate reality of the river.
